Portrait of Hortense Mancini, Duchesse Mazarin, as Venus

c.1665
Jacob-Ferdinand Voet (1639 – 1689/1700)

FRIDAY NIGHT = DATE NIGHT !

Speaking of pure beauty...  My sisters and I are cousins of the famous French cardinal Mazarin, who also had a lot of influence as prime minister at the court of Louis XIII and Louis IV. We young girls, for whom many a man turned around, were known at court as the "Mazarinettes".  As a 15-year-old I was married off to an immensely wealthy French general. But money does not bring tension into life. I left him and opted for an independent existence. Not obvious at the time. You may be wondering why I introduce myself to you so defiantly?

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THE SEXY POSE IN THIS PORTRAIT?

I just can’t help myself... After running away from my husband, I ended up having one affair after another. I had relationships with women too. In fact, the number of admirers and lovers I had, both male and female, was truly countless. But it has made me a strong independent woman.

You can find me in the Museum Snijders&Rockoxhuis.
